Cancer Council is Australia’s leading cancer charity, working across every aspect of every cancer. Each day, Cancer Council supports families affected by cancer when they need it most. We speak out on behalf of the community on cancer issues, empower people to reduce their cancer risk, and find new ways to better detect and treat cancer.
We offer a range of services to support anyone affected by cancer. Our practical support services include providing accommodation and transport to people who must travel to receive cancer treatment. We extend these services to the person’s accompanying carer or loved ones too, as we aim to keep families together during this difficult time. We also provide cancer counselling services and emotional support services. Our 13 11 20 Information and Support line assists thousands of people every day to get the answers, information and advice they need about cancer. We are committed to making cancer information and support accessible to all Australians, whether they live in big cities or remote communities.
We know that preventing cancer is one of the most effective ways of creating a cancer free future. We develop programs that encourage and empower people to lead healthier lifestyles to help reduce their cancer risk. We engage in grant schemes that will assist community groups catering to children and young people to build shade structures that will reduce the risk of skin cancer. We also provide workplaces with the resources they need to encourage their staff to eat healthily to reduce their overall cancer risk. We equip the community with the knowledge they need to prevent cancer.
Cancer Council is the largest non-government funder of cancer research in Australia. We are committed to conducting and funding world class research which will benefit all Australians. Since the 1980s, cancer survival rates have increased from 49% to 69% today. Every day, we’re working towards a cancer free future and Australia’s brightest and most knowledgeable researchers are helping us get there sooner.
We work with the community to change laws and policies to reduce cancer risks and improve cancer care. We urge local politicians to take an active interest in our mission to help us shape the future of issues such as smoking laws.
