BackgroundWednesday 16th Jun
I’m usually not one to share any struggles in public, but this seems like the appropriate place to summarise my family’s journey to help raise cancer awareness and to give some background about why I decided to #ROCKTHECHOP.
Dad was diagnosed with stage 4 Glioblastoma (aka brain cancer) in mid-2019. He was faced with a prognosis of 2-3 months without surgery or 12 months post-surgery to live. We were told that this wasn’t a curable disease. Dad fought hard against the cancer but unfortunately it wasn’t something that he could beat with sheer willpower alone. After a courageous battle, he passed on in September 2020.
It was exceptionally hard for my family to accept dad’s premature death. According to Chinese mourning traditions, I wasn’t permitted to cut my hair in the 100 days after dad’s passing. It sparked an idea to just continue growing my hair out and maybe one day donate it for a good cause.
I came across Cancer Council’s Ponytail Project in February this year. Immediately, I was drawn and registered online. Cancer Council provides essential cancer support services, prevention programs and lifesaving research. So any donation made would be absolutely amazing! <3>
