This year, I'm rocking the chop.

Not just for a new look, but in loving support of those who have faced cancer treatment, and for the family members,  carers and healthcare professionals who carry so much of the weight throughout the treatment journey, yet often go unrecognised.

This cause became deeply personal several years ago when one of my grandparents was diagnosed with cancer.   Then, two years ago, another member of my extended family passed away from Leukemia.  Witnessing the impacts of cancer treatment and loss didn't just show me how far-reaching the hardship of this disease truly is, it changed how I see life itself.   Sitting with and grief has a way of sharpening your gratitude, and reminding you how precious the present moment really is.

From that experience, I also came to understand the power of advocacy. Faced with the life-threatening diagnosis, my family established Liam's Lifesaving List, a platform dedicated to raising awareness about blood stem cell donation.  Seeing what a difference awareness alone can make lit something in me.

So, here's what I'm doing:

Alongside peers right across Queensland, I'll be growing my hair as long as possible throughout the year, then chopping it off and donating my ponytail to support people affected by cancer.  Every ponytail chopped makes a real difference. #ChopForChange

All funds raised go directly to cancer research, prevention programs, and support services — everything from transport to help patients get to and from their appointments, to sun-safe childcare programs keeping kids protected.
