I’m rocking the chop to put a stop to cancer!

This year I'm taking part in Cancer Council Queensland's Ponytail Project, growing my hair before cutting it to raise funds for Queenslanders impacted by cancer.

For me, this is much more than a fundraiser.

When I was at school, my Dad spent years battling Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma before later being diagnosed with Squamous Cell Carcinoma (SCC), which is a type of skin cancer. Watching someone you love fight cancer changes you. In 2014, when I was 20 years old, my Dad passed away. Throughout those years, my teachers and my school community wrapped around me with incredible care and support. They provided stability, encouragement and understanding during one of the most difficult times of my life.

Their compassion played a significant role in inspiring me to become a teacher. Every day, I strive to be that same source of support for the young people in my care, knowing that many students carry burdens we cannot always see.

My Dad's experience also shaped another passion of mine: sun safety. Having witnessed firsthand the devastating impact of skin cancer on my family, I believe prevention and education can save lives. Queensland is the skin-cancer capital of the world. It's why you'll always see me with a hat on and never with a natural tan!

That's why I'm proud to support Cancer Council Queensland. Every dollar raised helps fund life-changing cancer research, prevention programs, and practical support services for people and families facing cancer.

If you're able to support my Ponytail Project, I'd be incredibly grateful. Together, we can honour those we've lost, support those currently fighting cancer, and help create a future where fewer families have to experience what mine did.
